Alterations to Red House
Studio Jacob SS26
The project is an alteration to William Morris’ Red House (1859) designed by Morris and Phillip Webb. The house was originally convinced as both a home and the centre of Morris’ cultural scene, a group of young artists and designers who believed they could ‘tranform the world with beauty’. Red House was an experiment in architecture and community, described by Hermann Muthesius as “the very first example in the history of the modern house”.
The brief reanimates Morris and Webb’s unrealised plan to extend Red House to create a collective living and working community over 100 years later.
The framing of the project also asks Morris’ radical 19th century ideas about design, society, labour and the environment might have for our generation.
