Piazza Novissima
For the duration of the Festival of Applied Arts, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz became Piazza Novissima. The square will be transformed by a series of colorful, patterned columns. They are arranged to represent gateways, seating, colonnades and furniture that reclaim the street as a collectively used space. Columns are often used as symbols of authority and power. Here, however, this symbolism is undermined by their ephemeral cardboard materiality and the pop aesthetic of the patterns enveloping them. The design plays with different notions of the public sphere: the ad hoc assembly of a street festival; the formal rigor of the classical agora, the popular symbolism of the midsummer festival. With reference to Hollein's columns, “Piazza Novissima” advocates the street as an inclusive and expressive public space. The elements are made from typical infrastructure materials: Cardboard tubes, usually formwork for concrete columns, concrete rings for pipes and pallets for the transportation of goods. Here, freed from their usual role as vehicles, they are assembled and dressed up for a celebration. At the end of the festival, these materials will return to their original cycles. The festival and Piazza Novissima are an urban celebration of the diverse character of the Angewandte and the creativity of their community.Wed., June 26, 5 pm Opening of the “Piazza Novissima” and the festival
