ABOUT TEAM STUDENTS BRIEFS ADMISSION
EXCURSION TO PORTUGAL
as part of the brief ‘Super Ancient - Hyper Modern’
Winter Semester 2023/24
The Studio Jacob excursion to Portugal took the students to Évora and Lisbon and offered a mixture of architectural, cultural and historical insights.
As part of the theme "super ancient - hyper modern", the trip included visits to important megalithic sites such as the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro and the Dolmen Chapel of São Brissos. These visits provided an insight into ancient architectural practices and their cultural significance in the region. The group also explored the fascinating Capela dos Ossos, a chapel adorned with human bones, adding a historical dimension to their visit. The students also studied material culture in depth, particularly cork. Another highlight was the visit to Alvaro Siza's Malagueira housing. This visit was enriched by a special guided tour by Pedro Guilherme, who offered the exclusive opportunity to enter Siza's home, providing a unique insight into the architect's work and living environment.
The excursion ended in Lisbon with visits to the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) and the Gulbenkian Museum, known for its extensive collection of works of art from different eras and cultures, as well as a visit to the Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was a historical and architectural highlight of their Lisbon programme.
